Learning Goal B: Ethical Practice and Professional Accountability
Here is what I know:
The British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM, 2026) outlines that Licensed Practical Nurses are responsible for upholding professional standards, practicing ethically, and maintaining accountability in their decision- making. Ethical practice involves applying principles such as respect for persons’ integrity, and responsibility to ensure safe and compassionate care. Nurses must consider the impact of their actions on clients while maintaining professional judgement and adhering to regulatory expectations (BCCNM, 2026).
Here is what I need to learn more about:
I want to further develop my confidence in addressing ethical dilemmas, such as balancing client autonomy with safety and advocating for clients when concerns arise. Also, I would like to strengthen my understanding of how to apply professional standards when faced with complex clinical situations.
How I will gain knowledge and skill development:
I will regularly read and review BCCNM Professional Standards (BCCNM, 2026).
Reflecting on ethical situations encountered in clinical practice.
Seeking guidance from my instructors and experienced nurses.
Participating in discussions and case studies.
Importance of this: Ethical competence will support safe decision making, promote accountability, and ensure that care is delivered with respect and integrity in accordance with professional expectations (BCCNM, 2026).
