Learning Goal A: Cultural Safety and Humility

Here is what I know:

According to British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM, 2022), cultural safety involves creating environments that are physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually safe, where individuals’ cultural identities are recognized and respected without challenge or denial. Cultural safety also requires nurses to recognize power imbalances in healthcare and ensure that care does not disempower clients (BCCNM,2022).

From course learning, I understand that culture extends beyond race and ethnicity and includes factors such as language, religion, gender identity, socioeconomic status, life experiences, and geographic background, all of which influence how individuals experience health and healthcare (Taylor et al,2023). The course content emphasized that providing culturally competent care involves valuing diversity, avoiding stereotypes, and engaging in self- reflection to understand how personal beliefs may impact care delivery (Dahlkemper, 2021).

Lastly, I learned that barriers to culturally safe care can include cultural imposition, cultural blindness, stereotyping, and lack of awareness, which may lead to misunderstanding or inequitable care (Taylor et al, 2023). Recognizing these barriers has helped me understand the importance of approaching clients with openness, curiosity, and respect.

Here is what I need to learn more about:

I would like to develop my ability to identify my own biases and respond effectively in situations involving cultural differences. I want to deepen my understanding of trauma- informed and anti- racist approaches, particularly in relation to Indigenous health and the impacts of historical and systemic inequities on trust in healthcare (BCCNM, 2022). In addition, in my future practice as a practical nurse, I aim to improve my skills in providing person led care by actively involving clients in decision making and respecting their cultural preference.

How I will gain knowledge and skill development:

  • I will complete BCCNM cultural safety and humility learning modules (BCCNM, 2022).

  • Engaging in reflective practice to examine my assumptions and biases.

  • Applying culturally sensitive communication by asking clients about their beliefs and preferences.

  • Seeking feedback from my instructors and peers on culturally responsive care.

  • Participating in learning opportunities related to Indigenous health and equity.

Importance of this: Developing cultural safety competence will help me build trusting relationships, promote dignity, and provide equitable care to diverse populations (BCCNM, 2022).
