Importance to the Discipline and Practice of a Licensed Practical Nurse

Healthcare Excellence Canada is highly relevant to the discipline and practice of a Licensed Practical Nurse because quality improvement and patient safety are foundational components of professional nursing practice. According to the British Columbia College of Nurse and Midwives (BCCNM,2026), licensed practical nurses are accountable for providing safe, competent, and ethical care while contributing to quality improvement initiatives withing their practice environments. Engaging with organizations and evidence- based strategies that enhance care delivery (HEC, 2026).

For my clinical experiences, I have observed how older adults often experience fragmented care during transitions between hospital, community, and long- term care settings. For example, incomplete discharge communication or unclear follow up plans can increase the risk of medication errors or readmissions. Learning about HEC’s emphasis on integrated care and system- level improvement helped me understand that these challenges are not only individual incidents but are part of broader system issues that require coordinated quality improvement efforts (HEC, 2026). This perspective has encouraged me to view my role not only as a direct care provider, but also as an active participant in promoting safe transitions and advocating for clearer communication within healthcare team.

In gerontological practice, older adults are particularly vulnerable to adverse events such as falls, polypharmacy complications, and hospital readmissions. HEC’s initiatives to improve coordination, strengthen community care, and enhance patient safety directly support improved outcomes for seniors (HEC, 2026). As a future LPN, understanding these national initiatives motivates me to remain vigilant in reporting safety concerns, participating in care conferences, and supporting evidence-based practice changes.

Engagement with Healthcare Excellence Canada also reinforces my commitment to lifelong learning and professional accountability. The BCCNM (2026) emphasizes that nurses must maintain ongoing competence and engage in professional development. By subscribing to HEC and staying informed about quality improvement initiatives, I am taking active steps toward strengthening my professional growth and ensuring that my practice aligns with current national healthcare priorities.

Overall, involvement with Healthcare Excellence Canada enhances my understanding that practical nursing extends beyond bedside care. It includes participation in quality improvement, advocacy for safer systems, and collaboration within interdisciplinary teams to improve outcomes for older adults.
