Reflection 2: Leadership in Practical Nursing

Reflection-in- Action

During the leadership learning activities, I began to reflect on how leadership is demonstrated in everyday nursing practice rather than limited to formal management roles. While reviewing scenarios involving delegation, accountability, and conflict resolution, I evaluated how my tone, clarity, and decision-making could influence team functioning and patient outcomes. In those moments, I was engaging in reflection-in-action by critically considering how my behaviour could either support or hinder a safe and collaborative practice environment.

Research indicates that effective nursing leadership contributes to stronger teamwork and improved safety culture within healthcare settings (Mitchell et al., 2018). This evidence helped me recognize that leadership begins with self-awareness and professional responsibility.

Reflection-on- Action

After completing the activity, I reflected on how leadership responsibilities apply to my role as a practical nursing student and future LPN. I realized that leadership is expressed through actions such as advocating for patients, clarifying safety concerns, supporting colleagues, and modeling professional behaviour. During clinical experiences, I have observed how strong leadership fosters clarity, teamwork, and morale, whereas inconsistent direction can contribute to confusion and inefficiency.

This reflection aligns with the BCCNM (2026) Professional Standards, which emphasize accountability, ethical practice, and responsibility for contributing to safe and competent care. Leadership within practical nursing includes recognizing risks, communicating concerns appropriately, and influencing positive practice environments. Understanding this regulatory expectation strengthened my awareness that leadership is an integral component of professional identity.

What I Learned

I learned that leadership in nursing involves accountability, ethical decision-making, and effective communication. It requires influencing positive team dynamics and supporting a culture of safety. I also recognized that as a future LPN, I am expected to demonstrate leadership qualities within my scope of practice. My professional conduct, communication, and judgment can directly influence patient outcomes and team effectiveness.

What I Need to Know

I identified that I need to further develop my leadership competencies, particularly in delegation, conflict resolution, and fostering psychological safety within teams. Research suggests that nurse engagement in leadership practices strengthens teamwork and improves patient outcomes (Mitchell et al., 2018). Additionally, BCCNM (2026) emphasizes that LPNs are accountable for demonstrating professional leadership within their scope of practice. By strengthening these skills, I can better align my practice with regulatory expectations and contribute to safe, collaborative healthcare environments.
