Reflection 1: Interprofessional Practice in Health Care

Reflection-in- Action

During our learning activities on interprofessional collaboration, I became increasingly aware of how communication dynamics influence team functioning. On one occasion, I noticed myself hesitating to express a differing perspective after others had already contributed. In the moment, I consciously reflected on how remaining silent could limit collaborative decision making and potentially affect patient outcomes. I adjusted my approach by respectfully sharing my thoughts and clarifying my rationale. This demonstrated reflection- in- action, as I was actively evaluating and modifying my behaviour in real time to strengthen team communication.

Research indicated that structured and intentional interprofessional collaboration improves care processes and patient outcomes (Reeves et al., 2017). Recognizing this evidence reinforced the importance of active participation and effective communication within healthcare teams.

Reflection-on- Action

After the learning activity, I reflected more deeply on how my communication style directly influences patient safety. In clinical practice, particularly when caring for older adults with complex needs, effective interprofessional communication is essential to prevent fragmented care and adverse events. I recognized that hesitation to speak up may compromise clarity or delay necessary intervention.

This reflection aligns the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM, 2026), which states that licensed practical nurses are accountable for collaborating with other healthcare professionals to provide safe, competent, and ethical care. The professional standards emphasize accountability, advocacy, and effective communication. Understanding this regulatory expectation helped me realize that speaking up is not merely a personal confidence issue but a professional obligation.

What I Learned

Interprofessional collaboration requires intentional engagement, role clarity, and assertiveness. Effective teamwork does not happen automatically, it requires each member to actively participate, communicate clearly, and understand their professional responsibilities within the team. Through this learning experience, I recognized that confidence and accountability are essential components of collaborative practice. I also learned that my contribution as a practical nursing student and future LPN has professional value within the healthcare team. Even in a learner role, my observations, assessments, and communication can influence care decisions and patient outcomes. This realization has strengthened my commitment to actively engaging in team discussions and advocating for safe, coordinated care.

What I Need to Know

I identified that I need to further develop structured communication skills, such as SBAR, to enhance clarity and confidence in interdisciplinary discussions. Although I understand the framework conceptually, I recognize that consistent and effective use is essential to reduce miscommunication and patient safety risks. Research demonstrates that structured interprofessional collaboration improves healthcare processes and reduces adverse events (Reeves et al., 2017). Strengthening my communication skills aligns with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM, 2026) Professional Standards, which emphasize accountability, effective communication, and collaboration in team-based care. Developing competence in structured communication will enhance my ability to contribute safely and confidently within the healthcare team.
